Virtually the first step in any project, surveying is an important branch of civil engineering. Highly trained and skilled surveyors take meticulous measurements to determine the physical details of an environment, and then translate this data into usable form on a plan or map. Land surveying is one of the world’s oldest professions. Nearly 3,000 years ago, Egyptian surveyors used their skills to reestablish the boundaries of the fertile land surrounding the Nile River after its annual flooding. The Romans, who used measurements to determine taxes on conquered lands, were the first to recognize surveying as a profession. Surveying also has an honorable tradition in building America—George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Lewis and Clark were all professional surveyors.
Today, the construction industry routinely uses surveying services to build roadways, highways, and tunnels, and even for mining exploration. Surveyors also give advice and provide valuable information to guide the work of engineers, architects, and developers. Individuals might use a surveyor to resolve boundary disputes, build a new home, or determine the size of a plot of land for valuation.
Presco is proud to have served the surveying industry since our earliest days, when our founder Robert “Earl” McMackin and his son Ed began purchasing slit cheesecloth to use as roll flagging. Eventually, non-woven materials were replaced by vinyl products; and later, to meet surveyors’ demands, Presco began producing a more durable, industrial-grade roll flagging.
With control over our entire roll flagging manufacturing process, Presco can customize the composition of our PVC film by adding plasticizer to maximize physical properties such as tensile strength, cold crack, and UV stability.
